About the work
‘Almost Me’ is a painting of my older sister Flynn, who is currently recovering from vocal feminisation surgery. Being involuntarily mute for three weeks not only hampered her studies, but the familial and social relationships around her.
Flynn currently studies computer science at QUT and was the prior secretary of the QUT Queer Collective, advocating for safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ students.
Being a trans woman in the male dominated field of I.T, Flynn faces the inevitable discrimination and anxieties that accompany working within an industry lacking in vital representation of women, queer, and gender diverse individuals.
Flynn believes your voice is the most direct aspect of your identity. “My inner and outer selves have never matched. But now my voice almost matches what I sound like on the inside. I’m almost me.”
