About the artwork and sitter
Phil Brown was the Arts Editor of The Courier-Mail. He has written for a range of national and international newspapers and magazines and has published his poetry widely in the mainstream press and literary journals.
He is the author of two books of verse – Plastic Parables, and An Accident in the Evening. His book of humorous travel stories, Travels with My Angst was short-listed for the Arts Queensland Steele Rudd Award.
Chen was attracted to painting Phil because of his understanding of Chinese culture, and also his extensive knowledge of and interest in the arts, especially in Brisbane.
This is Chen’s second portrait of Phil Brown in the Brisbane Portrait Prize. The first portrait was a finalist in in 2019.
About the artist
Brisbane based artist, Jun Chen was born in China, studying at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He came to Australia in 1990, and did a Master of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) at QUT.
He has been an Archibald Prize finalist nine times; five-time Sulman Prize and five-time Wynne Prize finalist. He paints full time, working with landscape and portraits.
His work is held in many major gallery collections in Australia, and is also sought after by private collectors.
