About the artist and artwork
2021 Brisbane portrait prize finalist Ashlee Becks earned her First Class Honours in Fine Arts at Griffith’s Queensland College of Art in 2020.
‘I see right through you’ aims to examine the sometimes abusive relationship between body and image.
Ashlee’s self-portrait speaks to her own experience navigating mental illness, and the disparages between perception and reality.
It features the artist staring back at herself in a bathroom mirror. The materiality of the painting lends itself to an indexable sensibility, that is, being able to appreciate the traces left by the artist such as finger prints and the expressive application of paint.
Becks hopes that speaking openly about her struggle with body image will inspire viewers ‘To treat their own bodies more compassionately.’
A proud Brisbane native, Ashlee has showcased her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, achieving recognition as a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship.
