A Moment at the Table by Weiliao Zhang

This self-portrait captures a quiet, reflective moment while dining at a Thai restaurant. It’s a simple scene, but one filled with emotion. The soft purple light from the phone screen gently illuminates my face, creating a contrast that adds depth to the painting. I was inspired by French realism, aiming to show something honest and familiar in an everyday moment that reveals more than it seems.

The perspective draws attention to the Queenslander-style house in the background and the surrounding foliage. These details reflect the local environment I’ve grown up in and the culture that shapes my sense of home. More than anything, this is a painting about stillness. It’s about learning to see meaning in the ordinary, and recognising that even small moments can carry a quiet sense of self.
