Inherited Silk

About the work

This portrait began with a simple photoshoot, done for no other reason than to share the experience. But as the image took shape, it became something much more meaningful.

Growing up in Brisbane, far from where my family is originally from, I’ve often reflected on the idea of cultural inheritance. This work explores how identity isn’t just passed down, it’s also something we reclaim. The colour “Chinese red” carries deep significance for me. It symbolises resilience, celebration, and generational strength. More than just a vibrant hue, it connects me to a broader cultural memory.

The composition expresses quiet femininity through the flow of silk and the care in the hair accessories. My mother, shown here with me, has always embodied gentle strength. She was my first female role model, and over time, I’ve come to understand how much of her exists in me. This painting is more than a portrait. It’s a moment of love, a tribute to generational connection, and a way of honouring the traditions that continue to shape who I am.
