About the artwork

Darren Middleton is a celebrated musician, songwriter and guitarist best known as a member of one of Brisbane’s most successful and influential rock bands, Powderfinger.

This portrait by Viola Middleton, his daughter, is a heartfelt tribute to her father who has profoundly shaped her creative practice.
“Someone so real in my life, with such a close personal connection, I felt I had to sculpt him almost, I really wanted him to be there. Just like I always want him to be there. Dad’s lifelong unabashed attitude and belief in following through creative pursuits continues to inspire me to endure my own creative practice, finding the enjoyment that comes from making.”

Through loose, heavily applied brushstrokes, Darren is built physically on the canvas, giving a sense of presence to the work. The contemplative gaze invites the viewer to connect with both his character and the emotional bond between father and child.
