Art of Science / Science of Art by Alissa Lamb

Art of Science / Science of Art

Alissa Lamb

About the artwork

In this playfully dramatic portrait, Alissa Lamb captures her nine-year-old daughter, Siena, dressed in a lab coat and embellished safety glasses to convey her child’s passions for two commonly separated disciplines – art and science.

“One moment she is focused on solving climate change, the next moment she is writing a young adult novel about wolves. She is always busy and always ambitious. I am very fortunate to have a child like that, and as a parent I need to figure out how to nurture and direct that drive across varied interests.”

Sitting side on, Siena turns her head toward the viewer, the serious expression on her face contrasting with the fun and theatrical glasses she wears. The piece explores the limited ways art and science are often understood and how the two can complement one another when considered through a child’s eyes.

“This image reflects the limitless potential that arises when the “art” of discovery and the “science” of imagination intertwine.”
