About the artwork
This self-portrait is made from discarded objects Brisbane based artist Chelsea Shotton gathered over a period of time – forgotten film negatives found in a warehouse, torn paper, dried flower petals and other bits and pieces.
“The things I collect quietly tell a story about who I am, capturing parts of myself that a photograph alone can’t hold. No two people collect the same fragments; each object holds a small truth, a memory, or an indescribable feeling that represents part of my identity… Over time, I realised these fragments were small reflections of how I see the world and myself: layered, imperfect, shifting.”
Creating this work became a way for Shotton to embark on an exploration of identity, memory and the version of herself shaped in Brisbane.
“The work becomes a portrait not just of my face, but of the unseen threads that connect me to this city and to myself. It’s a reflection on how we become who we are, shaped by the things we hold onto, and the places we call home.”
