About the artwork
Peter Hudson painted a portrait of Brisbane based writer and poet Nathan Shepherdson that was selected for the Brisbane Portrait Prize last year. This year he returns with another portrait of his friend, albeit a very different one.
“This portrait seemed to have its own way of getting done. It was made in one live sitting and didn’t bring the usual problems. The design and materials were spontaneous decisions. The image seemed to have quickly arrived and under its own steam.”
Made in the same way he creates his plain-air landscapes, Hudson painted the portrait using a “look and put” approach, relying on just one sitting and responding as quickly as possible with the marks, tones and colours.
“This work has trapped something of Nathan’s character that the first painting missed. It is easier for me to look at and a reminder of how mercurial art and life can be.”
