About the artwork
Brisbane born Lindy Lee is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists with a practice spanning four decades. Internationally recognised, her work explores her Chinese ancestry and the philosophies of Buddhism and Taoism. Over the past decade, she has extended into the public realm with magnificent large-scale sculptural works.
Charmaine Lyons had a small window of time to photograph Lee in her studio in the Byron Bay hinterland in Northern New South Wales for this portrait.
“It was a profound privilege to spend a brief but impactful thirty minutes meeting and photographing Lindy Lee.”
Lyons captures Lee in a moment of quiet stillness, surrounded by her work, taking in the present moment. The black and white image lends a timeless quality, stripping away distraction and allowing the viewer to focus on the intimacy of the scene – the balanced composition, the contrast of darkness and light, the vivid textures and the calm expression that speaks volumes in silence.
“A shot I always seek to capture, eyes closed, the sitter focused within.”
