About the artwork
This diptych offers a dual portrait of Quandamooka artist Megan Cope, a respected member of the ProppaNOW collective for Indigenous Australian artists in Queensland. In one portrait, Cope is depicted in her studio surrounded by personal objects and oyster shells, which she frequently uses in her artworks to symbolise her connection to Country. In the other, she is shown in a personal setting in her loungeroom, patting her beloved dog, Djalo.
The artist and Cope have been friends for almost 20 years.
“This artwork attempts to capture both aspects of her: one side of her as the focused, determined artist in the studio, and the other as a more relaxed, dreamlike depiction of her… I’ve always admired her work and I think she’s one of the best Australian contemporary artists out there.”
Working fluidly and intuitively, the artist embraces the natural accidents and bleeding of watercolour to preserve a spontaneous and dreamlike quality in the work.
