Tender Recollection by Karla Galakatos

Art has been my passion ever since a young age, and my mother has played a significant role in shaping who I am as an artist. Whether it was scribbles in crayon or drawings of disfigured animals, I’d always come back to show her, and she’d never be anything less than ecstatic for me. This made me think, in the last seventeen years I can only recall three or so times where she had been the subject of my sketches.

That is why for her 50th birthday I wanted to gift her something special and personal. With a pencil in hand and 12 hours to spare, I made this artwork recapturing a moment from many years ago. Each stroke of the pencil was mesmerising and it was somewhat nostalgic having to deconstruct the scene to its most basic shapes and values.
