About the work

I am a 16-year-old student at Cannon Hill Anglican College and created this artwork in the Visual Art in Practice subject. The sitter for this photo is me, on the floor, as it was created as a part of a self-portrait assignment. The assignment was looking inwards to ourselves and our identity, and the folio was based on the theme of “Seeing the world through another lens”.

This photo symbolises my departed mother, in which the flowers I am surrounding myself with represent her beauty, elegance and the memories I have of her. They are positioned around my head to represent the space being a part of my mindscape. This photo was taken with low ISO, a medium aperture and high shutter speed settings on the telephoto lens. Accompanying the camera is two studio flash units with soft boxes positioned down onto my face, and a reflector light with gel shining a blue light. These lights were used to create a distinct mood of peace or tranquillity.
