About the work

Brisbane is a city known for its endless opportunities, natural landscapes, and wildlife. Most notably, it boasts 280 days of sunshine a year. Through this piece, I want viewers to recognise the many unique characteristics that allow us to call our home the “”paradise city.”” However, through my connection to our community, both studying and residing in Brisbane, I have discovered the alarming exploitation of these fortunate gifts. My artwork explores the neglectful underutilisation of these features by juxtaposing environments—specifically, indoor and outdoor surroundings.

Symbolised through the persistent beaming of light through artificial blinds, summer clothing, and separated environments, viewers can draw connections between natural health built from external energy sources found in our backyard—Australia. This is specifically recognised through the highlights along the figure, reflecting natural sunlight. I hope to encourage viewers to reflect upon privileges often unnoticed through the alarming implementation of manufactured conditions, and to reconnect with our beautiful home…

Judge's Notes

Seth’s Green’s 2024 Next Gen entry eloquently captures a mundane moment in a Brisbane interior and the melancholic dissonance of the teenage experience, with a sophistication and depth that belies his years. His considered approach to this image—with its lighting, composition, and stylised execution—all come together to articulate the artist’s ideas. Seth has submitted works to the ‘Next Gen’ prize for a number of years now, with each entry he has shown remarkable progress in both ideas and execution.
