About the artwork
Emma Cain is a Brisbane model and a friend of the artist. “She felt vulnerable after a relationship break up, and the series was a kind of reset. She wanted to strip herself bare, and be happy with who she is and how she looks.”
Aboriginal artist Amanda Grosse worked with Emma on the concept. They wanted to convey isolation and vulnerability that comes from emotional disruption in a persons life.
“And that learning to accept yourself and your body and appreciating what it does for you and how it’s got you through – instead of standards set by the media and the world.”
Emma took her personal experience with her own struggles and wanted to show that “…no matter how hard it is we are all still beautiful even when we are bare to the bones.”
The figure of Emma is curled up and sitting on a beach in which the tide is turning. Her head appears below the horizon line and the expanse of water and sky surrounding the figure adds to the sombre feeling of the image. The black and white photograph has a quiet beauty and draws attention to both individual vulnerability and the resilience of humanity.
