About the artwork
As an animator, Beth Harvey draws a lot, and she draws herself in comics all the time to tell stories, share emotions, and communicate feelings. Passionate about portraits, people and animation, this portrait is how she sees herself. “…immersed in the world of animation. This artwork captures me enjoying a quiet moment on my balcony in the warmth of Queensland’s autumn sun.”
Beth Harvey considers this portrait a reflection on the two worlds she inhabits as an animator. “It illustrates the contradictory nature of being an artist, living in the real world and the worlds I create.”
She has used watercolour and pencils to reflect the influence traditional animation and illustration have had on her. Drawing on the traditions of animation, the figure becomes doll-like and contented in this brightly lit world.
“As an artist, I obsess over choices in my artwork —light and colour, shadows and highlights, texture and imperfections—all of which are evident in this piece. This self-portrait reveals how I see the world.”
