About the artwork
Star presenter on ABC TV’s Gardening Australia, Hannah Moloney’s gardening adventure began in West End, where she grew up on her father’s permaculture herb nursery.
In this joyous and optimistic portrait, Hannah stands before her vibrant pink South Hobart home, matched by her warm and generous smile.
Judith Sinnamon chose to paint Hannah because she helps people do something practical and hopeful regardless of what happens in the world. “The small act of hope by planting a seed and tending to it can be transformative in creating connection with nature, with each other and with the possibilities of a sustainable future.”
Over two days in Hobart making a start on the portrait, Judith and Hannah talked about optimism and hope. The words on the house are Hannah Moloney’s favourite quote from from US activist and author, Rebecca Solnit, which reads in part: “To hope is to give yourself to the future – and that commitment to the future is what makes the present inhabitable.”
Over the past two decades, Hannah Moloney has worked on organic farms and urban agriculture initiatives. She is an ambassador for Community Gardens Australia, and was awarded the Tasmanian Young Landcare Leader Award in 2015. She started work on Gardening Australia 2019, and her book, The Good Life: How To Grow A Better World, was published in 2021.
