About the artwork and sitter
Jess Le Clerc runs an Art School on the Sunshine Coast. She has inspired and guided many artists in their journey toward self-discovery, while simultaneously producing her own substantial body of work, raising a family and displaying remarkable courage and tenacity in the face of a near fatal brain aneurysm.
‘I reworked this intimate portrayal of the artist sipping a steaming cup of tea, on a couch surrounded by symbols of familiarity – family photographs, books and memorabilia, precious fragments of her life.’
Gaylene has incorporated alla prima and layering and glazing to create the depth of colour and vibrancy which she says reflect the nature of this remarkable artist.
Jess Le Clerc won the 2020 BPP People’s Choice Award with a portrait of Jandamarra Cadd.
About the artist
Gaylene earned her arts degree in 1991, but it wasn’t until she emigrated to Australia in 2015, that she truly began to explore and develop her abilities in art and painting. After enrolling in an art school, she rediscovered her love for creating and worked to develop and grow her painting skills.
