About the artwork and sitter

Ian Smith is an artist, who grew up in Cairns, the same hometown as Jack.

‘The hometown connection continued as we swapped cyclone stories while he sat for me. We now both call Brisbane our home and Ian’s contribution to Brisbane and Queensland more generally makes him the perfect sitter for this prize!’

The title is a reference to Ian’s excellent dress sense but to his own ‘hometown’ series from the 1980s, ink drawings about growing up in the tropics.

‘I focused on capturing Smith’s steely expression while keeping him friendly and relaxed.’
