Leonard Brown by Jason McNamara

Leonard Brown

Jason McNamara

About the artwork

For over five decades, Leonard Brown has dedicated his life to making art. Deeply spiritual in his approach, he is best known for his large abstract works and his religious icon paintings. Brown’s works are embraced by the Orthodox Church and shaped by a lifetime of faith, curiosity and contemplation. Born and raised in New Farm and now living in Ipswich, he has exhibited widely and his work is held in institutions and private collections around the world.

Rather than photographing Brown with his paintings, Jason McNamara wanted the portrait to stand on its own. The close composition removes distraction, allowing Leonard’s expression to carry the full weight of the work. His face speaks of a lifetime devoted to making art, while his upward gaze, reflective and curious, quietly echoes the spirituality that continues to inspire his practice.
