About the artwork
Uncle Rossi Anderson is a Ugarapul Elder and Traditional Custodian of the lands from the foot of the Great Dividing Range to Moreton Bay. His life has been marked by loss and tragedy, yet he is known above all for his resilience and devotion to family. Raised by his elder sister after his mother was sent to Fantome Island due to illness, he went on to raise his late Brother’s children with his wife. Decades later, when two of his three adult children passed away, he and his wife opened their home once more, raising their grandchildren with the same steadfast love.
Jim Filmer has rendered Uncle Rossi in black and white, honouring both his warmth and his quiet strength. “I Am Ugarapul honours not only Uncle Rossi’s identity as a Traditional Custodian, but the generations he has held together.”
