About the artwork
David Broker is a writer, curator and arts professional whose career has shaped Brisbane’s arts landscape. From 1995 to 2006 David both produced and presented a weekly radio show called Art to Lunch on 4ZZZ, and he served as Deputy Director and Acting Director of the Institute of Modern Art, challenging bureaucracy and dedicating himself to local, emerging and experimental artists at a pivotal moment in Queensland’s cultural landscape.
Rebecca Davis first met Broker in Adelaide’s 1990s contemporary art scene, and the two recently reunited in Brisbane after his sixteen-year directorship at Canberra Contemporary. This double portrait holds both versions of Broker: the considered arts professional and the animated social force who brought people together. Between them, a mirror ball, Broker’s personal contribution to the portrait, scatters light equally across the room. A symbol of nostalgia, joy and collective energy, it speaks to the man as much as the role.
