About the work
This painting reflects the evolving nature of my relationship with my sister, who is now studying at university in Brisbane. Even though we live far apart, digital technology has allowed us to stay close. Often criticised for creating distance, it has become the bridge that keeps us connected. Late-night messages, shared memes, video calls, and quick comments on social media are now the way we stay present in each other’s lives.
The image blends black-and-white realism with a vibrant camera display, contrasting physical distance with emotional closeness. The screen shows her in full colour, representing how these small moments remain full of life, personality, and love. Through this work, I wanted to challenge the idea that connection depends on proximity. Real connection comes through intention. It’s found in the quiet effort to show up for someone, even from a distance.
