About the artwork
Carlos Barrios explores the connection between people and their beloved pets in this tender self-portrait of him embracing his two young kelpies. Painted shortly after the passing of his former dogs, the work is both a tribute and a reflection on companionship, grief and renewal.
“The heart is open with so much love and empathy from all aspects. My previous dogs passed away not long ago and these new members of the family help to heal us, especially me as I spend most of the time hanging with the dogs around the studio and garden. My lovely companions and friends.”
The quick and expressive brushstrokes give the painting energy and vibrancy, capturing the subject’s presence with immediacy and emotional charge. The earthy palette mirrors the calm intimacy of the scene, highlighting the grounding presence his dogs offer in his daily life.
“I needed to deal with some very strong emotions and felt comfortable in this moment of vulnerability with my new dogs.”
