About the artwork
Caitlyn Taylor first met fellow artist Amber Kingi at an art prize in 2018. A few years later they started working at the same art gallery together and have since become close friends.
“Sharing the story of people that matter to me, in painted form, is my expression of appreciation and celebration for who my subject is.”
In this hyper-realistic painting, Kingi sits on a white chair in a shallow pool of water. Chic, confident and composed in this surreal setting, she holds a paintbrush in one hand, as though ready to unleash her artistry on the world.
“Amber Kingi is a mother, an artist and the epitome of cool… Her creativity hinges on her vivacious self-expression and ability to laugh at life. Her cool lies in her embodiment of style and quiet refusal of norms.”
Taylor is relatively new to portraiture and this is only the second portrait she has created. Her first – of prominent Gold Coast gallery director Terri Lew – was a finalist in the Lester Prize in 2024.
