About the artwork
Brisbane based musician Kerry Jacobson is the best known drummer for iconic New Zealand rock band Dragon and current member of The Filthy Animals. An Aria Hall of Fame inductee, he has also played with Mondo Rock, Canned Heat, Richard Clapton, Renee Geyer, The Supremes and Ian Moss.
In this portrait, Jacobson is surrounded by imagery relating to his life’s work. Storm clouds reference Dragon’s 1983 hit song, Rain, while the title of the portrait is a play on another Dragon chart-topper, April Sun In Cuba.
“Being a musician myself, I have always revered Kerry’s drumming style and technique. I was unaware he was living in Brisbane for quite some time. I made contact, we became friends, and I’ve even played in his band once. By painting this portrait, I would like everyone in Brisbane to know that an Australian music legend walks among us in Brisbane and help acknowledge his contributions to Australian popular music.”
