About the artwork
John A Robinson and Andrew Wild are part of a group of artists who meet weekly to draw and paint portraits.
“I’ve come to know Andrew as a thoughtful, pensive artist whose work reflects a deep seriousness about painting. His imagery draws on 1940s film noir and 1950s pulp fiction covers, blending narrative with a strong command of colour and pigment – skills shaped by his career as an illustrator.”
In this portrait, expressive brushwork, an unfinished surface and a non-literal palette reflect identity as evolving and emotionally rich. Isolating the head against a white background to invite close reflection on the character and detail etched into the face, the painting explores the dignity inherent in every individual.
The title Andr3w draws a parallel between number plate language and painting, both relying on minimal, suggestive cues to communicate meaning. Just as the altered spelling invites the viewer to decode and interpret, the qualities of the portrait encourage deeper engagement.
