About the work

My self-portrait captures a scene that could be glimpsed throughout many of the streets of suburban Brisbane, on a warm night through open windows. I have painted myself talking on the phone, while staring out my bedroom window. Set at nighttime, I used multiple lighting effects reflected onto and through the window to create a contrast between inside and outside. The interior projects a warm yellow glow towards the darkness outside, with intense exterior lighting shining onto the weatherboards and one side of the window. The composition is not centred, suggesting a moment captured in passing. A range of warm and soft colours are used to emphasise the life that is radiating from inside the room, whereas viewers are made to feel like they are positioned outside in the evening light, witnessing an ordinary moment while passing by a suburban Brisbane home.
