About the artwork
In this portrait Leanne Benjamin AM is shown displaying the poise and confident pose of a professional dancer. Rockhampton born, she is now Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet, having spent most of her career dancing with London’s Royal Ballet.
The artist has positioned her body for dramatic effect so that her legs fall, unusually, to the side of the chair under the armrest. Her shoes are kicked off with her bare pointed feet referencing her former life as a professional dancer.
She stares intently at a spot outside of the canvas, looking to the future. Matteo Bernasconi was immediately struck by Benjamin’s presence and energy, “… inspiring me to capture her spirit.”
The antique chair points to the long tradition of dance but its stage-like positioning gives the portrait a sense of performance and drama.
The dark background and quick brushstrokes add to the energy and intensity of the portrait. “Her face exudes openness and alertness, reflecting her eagerness to embark on the next chapter of her journey.”
Leanne Benjamin is Vice-Chair of The Royal Ballet Companies, was awarded the OBE in 2005 and made a member of the order of Australia in 2015.
