About the artwork and sitter
Deirdre currently works at the Children’s Art Centre at QAGOMA. She has enjoyed an extensive career as an art teacher, working across primary, secondary and university education, and inspiring countless young creatives.
Here, she is portrayed in her work uniform, surrounded by roses.
‘I painted her wearing the lanyard as an overstatement of who she is, in the portrait genre that traditionally relies on nuance and subtlety.
‘Deirdre is my partner and is present in the studio where I’m often found painting roses amongst other things. She is at the ‘centre’ of all the decent work I make.’
