About the work
This portrait is of my friend Irene Lim, who is from Chungcheong-do in South Korea. Through this painting, I wanted to show both her Korean heritage and her life in Brisbane, and how these two parts of her identity exist in harmony.
Throughout the artwork I included symbols that represent balance and connection. The Korean side features symbols of longevity and harmony, while the Brisbane side represents resilience and adaptability. Together, they reflect the way Irene embraces both her traditional Korean culture and the life she has built here in Australia.
The sun and moon bring these ideas together, symbolising the balance between both sides of Irene’s identity. For me, this portrait celebrates the way different cultures can come together to shape who we are.
