Patty by Freddy Palethorpe

Patrick Carrigan isn’t just a Queensland Origin star and Broncos player; he’s also a former captain of my school, St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace, and someone I look up to both on and off the field. As a rugby player myself, I’ve always admired his work ethic, leadership, and connection to Brisbane.

I created this portrait in the lead-up to the State of Origin series, as part of a collaboration with Queensland Rugby League. In the painting, I worked hard to capture the expression that defines him: focused, strong, and grounded. I experimented with mixing skin tones, balancing warmth and shadow, and layering colours to bring out depth and emotion.

This work marks a turning point in my art journey. It reflects my passion for footy, my respect for those who lead by example, and my pride in being part of the Brisbane and Terrace community.
