About the artwork

Balloon artist Wayne Bloomfield is a well-known face in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall where he sets up his balloon stand several times a week. He has been a friend of the artist for many years.

“He brings his cheeky, fun personality and amazing balloon talent to provide some special magic to the inner city. With small tubes of rubber he creates quite intricate animals and shapes which delight children and adults alike. His hands move quickly, twisting and tying, to create his wonderful creatures.”

In this joyous painting, Bloomfield is depicted in his element. Standing behind his balloon cart in the middle of the mall, surrounded by his friendly and colourful creations, one on top of his head, his beaming smile and playful spirit radiates through the canvas. In the foreground, Banksy’s ‘Girl with Balloon’ is referenced.

“It speaks to the child in all of us, reaching out for the hope of a better future.”
