About the artist and artwork
Conor Knight is an emerging artist based in Brisbane/Meanjin.
This self portrait was painted while the artist was in Spain, and is modelled on the 2001 Archibald Prize winning painting by Nicholas Harding of actor John Bell.
Knight was attracted by the strength and formality of the coat.
A self taught artist, Knight began painting three years ago, after becoming friends with other artists who had entered the Brisbane Portrait Prize.
He now paints full time from his studio in West End, and is working toward a solo exhibition.
Conor has been a finalist in the Lethbridge 20000 Small Scale Art Award 2021 and 2023, the Clayton Utz Art Award 2021, the National Emerging Art Prize 2021, the 2023 Lethbridge Landscape Prize, and was award 2nd place in the figurative section of the Doyle’s Award 2023.
