About the artwork and sitter
This large self portrait shows artist Daniel Butterworth as a larger than life head floating on the cardboard background and dominating the surrounding space.
Butterworth mostly paints self portraits or figures, and has a deep understanding of proportion and form. His work is characterised by fast, gestural and expressive brushwork.
He says of this work: “Wanting my paint work to be fresh and not laboured, this work was painted in one sitting. Showing a bit of arrogance, my work is to reflect my love for paint.” This love for paint is coupled with a sense of immediacy and movement.
About the artist
