About the artwork and sitter
This is an experienced artist painting an experienced artist. Jun Chen presents Leonard Michael Brown, a Brisbane artist with an international reputation, mid conversation, his expressive hands underlying his point.
The searing gaze is a window into his quick intellect and his vast knowledge. Brown’s works are held in state and national collections, and he won the Brisbane Portrait Prize Lord Mayor’s Award in 2019.
Jun Chen and Leonard Brown are good friends and were neighbours for many years in New Farm. This is the third time Jun has painted Leonard’s portrait.
“This year I met Leonard at a party. We had a very good conversation about our arts. Suddenly I got an idea and told Leonard that I would like paint his portrait this year. This time I chose the moment he is talking to people.”
