A Guy Like Me by Russell Shakespeare

A Guy Like Me

Russell Shakespeare

About the artwork and sitter

Russel Shakespeare’s portrait of Michael Zavros is a work that operates on a number of levels. By substituting his real head with the replica mannequin version, he is further questioning notions of reality and artifice, as Zavros does in his own work.

“In 2020 I was doing a series of portraits of the artist Michael Zavros at his studio in Brisbane. Michael was working on his latest art installation ‘A guy like me’. In this work Zavros created a lifelike mannequin of himself which was a combination of his traditional sculptural work that was then 3D printed.

“It was fascinating and surreal at the same time to see this lifelike mannequin head held in front of his face, staring blankly back at me.”

Michael Zavros is a leading Brisbane artist, who’s work is collected in many Australian and international institutions. He exhibits regularly, and his highly sought after work is held in many private collections.
