About the artwork and sitter
This is a painting of Monica Rohan and her husband, Mitchell Donalsdon, who is also an artist. They both work from their home studio in Brisbane.
“I’m a figurative painter whereas Mitch is an abstract painter, but we both pair bold colours with subtle details. I wanted to explore our relationship, particularly in the strange context of lockdown. There is a subtle tension between the wobbly patterns, vibrating colours and our stern, straight-ahead expressions which reveals something of our influence on each other and our art practices through times of uncertainty.”
About the artist
Monica Rohan moved to Brisbane from rural Queensland in 2008 to attend QCA, and has lived here ever since. Her work is held in public and private collections throughout Australia and she’s been a finalist in numerous national art prizes including the Archibald twice.
