Best Mates (John Stainton & Puss Puss)

About the artwork and sitter

John Stainton is a Brisbane-based Australian TV-industry legend. He created Steve Irwin’s popular nature documentary television series, The Crocodile Hunter. He produced and directed every episode, as well as the spin-offs, Croc Files and The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, and the MGM movie, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course. John is also a co-founder of Eat Street Northshore and creator owner of Rangelands Outback Camp.

John Stainton’s close friendship with Steve Irwin is well documented. What is perhaps lesser known, is the special bond that exists between John and his best mate, a cat named Puss Puss. This portrait is an attempt to capture the essence of that relationship between John and the love of his life.

Behind the scenes

I first met John Stainton on my Birthday back in 2005. I was working as an Art Director on a shoot with Steve Irwin and John, Steve’s Director. When Steve found out that it was my birthday (I believe John told him), he spontaneously took off his shirt and used it to write me a birthday greeting. This very precious piece of memorabilia led me to my choice of sitter, and inspired me to convey his story of mateship.
