Hummingbird by Justin Buchner

Hummingbird

Justin Buchner

About the artwork

The painting is a portrait of the artist’s son at 2 years old with the inspiration derived from his son’s joy of visiting a favourite café with his mother, Anna. Painted with a Calypte anna or Anna’s hummingbird in the foreground the child here is the object of devotion; innocence framed within a halo like that seen in Greek Orthodox Church iconography.

About the sitter

The subject of the portrait is the artist’s son at 2 years old although the painting was completed when he was 12.
