Vibrant joy by Jessica Burow

Winifred moved from Cameroon to Australia late last year, and now we go to the same church. I was immediately drawn to her warmth, the vibrant clothes she wears and the joy she brings wherever she goes. Having spent my whole life in Australia, I loved hearing her stories about Cameroon and learning about the challenges she has overcome.

This portrait celebrates both her resilience and her connection to the two places she calls home. The flowers in the background include species native to both Australia and Cameroon, symbolising the way her life now spans two countries while remaining deeply connected to each.

I wanted to capture not only Winifred’s story, but also the brightness of her personality. Her optimism and strength have left a lasting impression on me, and I hope that sense of warmth shines through in this portrait.
