Restless by Emma Wu

Restless reflects one of the defining moments of my life: moving from China to Australia in 2019. It captures the uncertainty of leaving behind everything that was familiar while holding onto the hope that something new was waiting ahead.

In this portrait, I lie on my bed facing a bright light with a calm yet melancholic expression. The blue light across one side of my face represents the sadness of leaving my life in China, while the vertical composition represents the bright future that laid ahead within Australia. This contrast of light reflects the feeling of existing between two worlds as I faced it both literally and symbolically. At the time, I couldn’t imagine what the future would hold, but that uncertainty became an important part of my journey.

Australia has become much more than a new home. It has given me the opportunity to discover who I am, embrace new experiences and grow into the person I am today. Looking back, I realise that the moments which feel the most uncertain can also become the ones that shape us the most.
