Homesick by Liam Nunan

Homesick

Liam Nunan

About the artwork

Liam Nunan was born and raised in Brisbane, though he has called Sydney home for many years now. This self-portrait, titled Homesick, came together over two days when home was on his mind. He has positioned himself in front of a small painting of the suburban outlook from his parents’ Herston balcony, a painting within a painting, a view he knows by heart from the outside looking in.

Nunan describes the work as “an expression of dual belonging and nostalgia, closing the distance between Brisbane and Sydney and giving me a window back to my family home.” Self-portraits are a regular and important part of his practice, functioning as a journal entry, a logbook, a chance to check in, calibrate and record the meeting point between outer and inner worlds. This one sits quietly at the intersection of where he is from and where he has chosen to be.
