God is a Mathematition

Jamie Congdon

About the artwork

God is a Mathematician began as a self-portrait that kept evolving. Jamie Congdon sits on an old couch with his granddaughter Isla at his feet. Jamie feels they are kindred spirits, similar in many ways, they are both left-handed and constantly filling books with drawings.

A starry night sky is etched into the walls behind them, a recurring motif in Jamie’s works. Jamie and Isla look upward from below, a perspective that gives the impression of something vast above. An Einstein graphic sits on Jamie’s shirt. He has long been fascinated by physics and the idea that mathematics might be the universe’s ultimate language, more universal than words, more honest than anything else we have. “The ultimate truth is maths,” he says. Isla peers up beside him, curious and cheeky. Two of a kind, together they look upward, toward the same sky, asking the same questions.
