Veronica on Country by Dolor Milford

Veronica on Country

Dolor Milford

About the artwork

Over the past five years, Dolor Milford has sat with and listened to a number of Indigenous women, creating space for their stories to be heard.

In this image, taken on Milford’s mobile phone, Mununjali-Yuggara woman Veronica Close-Sandy sits on Country in a park by a creek in Alderley, Brisbane. With her arms wrapped around her knees and a solemn gaze, she appears deep in thought. Sitting beneath the trees, her feet sink into the carpet of leaves, connecting her physically and spiritually to the land.

“This photograph captures her sadness and her personal need to be connected to Country to enable healing… being in a local park and watching the trees and the local creek flow by is so important to her as a method of coming to terms with and processing the intergenerational trauma that has scarred her life and continues to scar her life.”
