About the artwork
Dylan Jones met fellow artist Christopher R. Inwood in 2024 when they were both finalists in the Brisbane Portrait Prize.
“I often paint other artists as we all deal with similar trials and triumphs. He sat back in a relaxed pose on the chair with his weary countenance quietly conveying a sense of relief after a hard day’s toil in his studio.”
Like many of Jones’s works, the portrait was painted from life and completed in a single session.
“I let the model get comfortable and after a few small adjustments to the pose, I dive in. I’ve found that overthinking can work against me. Painting from life keeps me just distracted enough to stay out of my own way, allowing spontaneity and intuition to guide the work.”
In this dynamic and expressive portrait, the use of large hog hair brushes gives the painting energy and physicality. The muted colour palette invites the viewer to feel the painting rather than just view it.
