About the work

I am a Year 12 student at WestMAC in Karrabin. My primary medium for artwork is acrylic and cotton wool, which I use to create crochet art. Solar Flare was created as part of my internal assessment for Year 12 Visual Art. My inquiry question was, “How can I manipulate colour, form, and composition to convey my own emotions through crochet pieces?” Solar Flare is a self-portrait of my own emotions—the happy ones that I connect with crocheting. As both my grandmothers and my great-grandmother crocheted and taught me how to crochet, there are countless happy emotions that I connect with this craft. The repeated use of the circle motif and the colour yellow are intentional, as throughout history these shapes and colours have been linked to joy. I chose to leave the strings of each circle uncut, as they help to remind me that my past emotions are just as important as my current ones. I am proud of this artwork, as I feel it successfully portrays my internal emotions in an abstract portrait.
