Young Man by Dylan Jones

Young Man

Dylan Jones

About the artwork

In this portrait of a young man, Jack Smith, 13, sits quietly, absorbed in his reading. Dylan Jones first met Jack eight years ago when they were neighbours, and they have remained in touch.

“During this time, I forged a particularly close bond with him and his brother Kit. Despite the fact our time as neighbours was brief, we have all stayed in touch over the years. I’ve watched Jack grow from a child into a kind and engaging young man who shares a strong connection with his family and those close to him.”

Dylan’s trademark broad brushstrokes and limited detail give a sense of the artist capturing a fleeting moment in time. The muted colour palette gives the image a sense of calm reflection and understated confidence. He works across still life, landscapes and portraits, and has a way of giving everyday objects increased agency. His portrait subjects are imbued with a fresh sense of presence and dignity.

“Jack didn’t hesitate when I asked him to be my subject for a portrait. I painted this work purely from life on the verge of his 13th birthday.”
