Inside Out by Katie Newman

Inside Out

Katie Newman

About the artwork

In her artwork Inside Out, Katie Newman portrays a younger version of herself, incorporating elements of her grown-up self.

The juxtaposition of her solemn expression against her costume and the unconventional setting challenges the authenticity of her pout. It reflects the ongoing internal conflict between the desire to be taken seriously and the inclination to embrace light-heartedness as a defence mechanism. The skeleton suit draws our attention to ideas of internal personalities versus external expectations.

“I am in a constant battle with myself, choosing between wanting to be taken seriously by others and not taking myself seriously to save face”.

This piece symbolizes the struggle of forming an identity, grappling with the dichotomy of self-perception and external expectations. It is an exploration of the tension between who we are and who we want to be.

The self-portrait is full of dichotomies, between humour and concern, and youth and adulthood. The setting in the bathroom and the quizzical look emphasise this point.
