About the artist

Kate McKay is a Brisbane artist represented by Jan Manton Art. In 2013 she completed her Bachelor of Fine Art with First Class Honours at Griffith University. She has exhibited in Queensland galleries including Jan Manton Art, Griffith University Art Gallery and Redcliffe Art Gallery. In 2015 McKay won the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize and was a finalist in the 15 Artist’s Exhibition, Redcliffe Art Gallery.

About the sitter

Samuel Hinton is an award-winning astrophysicist, and has recently been a contestant on Australian Survivor. Also a robotics and software engineer, astronomer, education advocate and cat enthusiast, he is passionate about sharing his love of science. At 26, he is one of the few people in the world tackling the largest mysteries of the universe – the hunt for dark energy and dark matter.  His theses have won multiple prizes, including the coveted Bok prize, awarded to the best Master’s thesis in Australia.  Much of his academic work has been recognised by the Australian Institute of Physics, the Astronomical Society of Australia, the Gemini Institute and by Lawrence Berkeley National La.
